Configuration Notes for Netscape 2.01I
==============================================================================
Configuration Files:
With release 2.01I of the Netscape Navigator, a new directory
is created in which configuration files are placed. This
directory is called `$HOME/.netscape'. Existing 1.x configuration
information is copied into this directory upon first execution
of Netscape. A dialog is presented asking whether or not you
would like to automatically delete your 1.x files.
If you do not choose to delete the old files, then they will
continue to be used by older versions of Netscape, but version
2.01I and newer will never touch them.
If you have a file or directory in $HOME called .netscape,
you should rename it prior to running version 2.01I.
If you don't, it will be renamed for you, to `.netscape.BAK'.
Mail:
Please see the Release Notes for important information on
configuring and using Netscape Mail. Knowing how to
configure and use Netscape Mail will prevent you from
losing mail messages.
Java Applet Support:
Java Applet support is available for SunOS 4.1, Solaris 2.3,
Solaris 2.4, HPUX, IRIX and Linux and OSF1.
To run Java applets with the Java-enabled version, the
Navigator needs to be able to load Java class files from a file
called moz2_0.zip. This file is included in the distribution,
but must be moved to any of these directories:
The current directory
/usr/local/netscape/java/classes
/usr/local/lib/netscape
$HOME/.netscape
If you were running Java with an earlier beta version of the
Netscape Navigator, you need to replace your old moz2_0.car file
or old moz2_0.zip file with the new moz2_01.zip file supplied in
this distribution.
A note on Solaris 2.4 installation:
The Solaris 2.4 Navigator is dynamically linked with the X and
Motif libraries. If the Motif dynamic libraries are not
properly installed, the Navigator will exit with this error:
ld.so.1: netscape: fatal: libXm.so.3: can't open file: errno=2
Installing Motif dynamic libraries will get the navigator
working. If you cannot install the Motif libraries, you
can run the Navigator for Solaris 2.3 on your Solaris 2.4
machine.

Installation Instructions

Supported Platforms:
Netscape Navigator 2.01I has been localized for the following platform and language
combinations (where de = German, fr = French, ja = Japanese):
DEC
osf/1: de, fr, ja (euc), ja (sjis)
HP
hpux: de, fr
SGI:
irix52: de, fr, ja (euc)
Sun:
sol23,sol24: de, fr, ja (euc)
Tar files:
Each platform has a .tar file for the binary and a .tar file for each locale supported.
Example:
IRIX 5.2 binary file:
netscape-v201I-export.mips-sgi-irix5.2.tar.Z
IRIX 5.2 locale files:
netscape-de-v201I-export.mips-sgi-irix5.2.tar.Z
netscape-fr-v201I-export.mips-sgi-irix5.2.tar.Z
netscape-ja-v201I-export.mips-sgi-irix5.2.tar.Z
Directions to install:
1. Download the binary and locale files that match your platform and language
to a directory on your system.
2. Uncompress the .Z files by typing:
uncompress *.Z
3. Un-tar the files by typing (example for irix de):
tar -xvf netscape-v201I-export.mips-sgi-irix5.2.tar
tar -xvf netscape-de-v201I-export.mips-sgi-irix5.2.tar
You will notice that the locale files are un-tarred into appropriate subdirectories
such as:
/netscape-de
/netscape-fr
/netscape-ja
The subdirectories contain the appropriate locale files and scripts for installing
and uninstalling them.
The operating system retrieves localized resource files from a standard
directory. The install script will copy the Navigator locale resources to this
standard directory. Uninstall will remove the Navigator locale files from it.
4. Change directories to the appropriate locale directory you wish to install.
*Note: To execute uninstall and install, you may need to first gain "root"
(super-user) access.
Execute the uninstall script by typing:
./uninstall
This will uninstall older Netscape locale files that may have been installed
previously.
5. Execute the install script by typing:
./install
This will install the appropriate Netscape locale files to the standard directory.
Once you have installed the locale files you should logout as root (super-user) and
login in as yourself again.
6. The Navigator can be executed now by simply typing:
./netscape (when in the directory where the tar file was extracted).
You can also copy the program to a system directory of your choice.

OTHER INFORMATION
==============================================================================
* Included with all distributions is a file called XKeysymDB. Without this
file, many warnings about "unknown keysyms" will be generated when the
program starts up, and most keyboard equivalents won't work. This is a
general problem with running Motif programs on systems not configured for
Motif, and so will be necessary on most Sun systems.
This file is included with all packages because some systems have an older
version of this file, so you may still get some warnings. The XKeysymDB
file normally goes in /usr/lib/X11/XKeysymDB or /usr/openwin/lib/XKeysymDB,
but you can override that with $XKEYSYMDB.
* Also included with all distributions is a file called Netscape.ad, which
lists the default resources which are built in to the program. It is
not necessary to install this; it is provided for informational purposes.
See the comment at the top of the file for more information. This .ad file
is the English default resource file that resides in the same directory as
the netscape binary file. The localized versions of this file exist in the
locale subdirectories mentioned previously (e.g. /netscape-fr).
* If you get a "Cannot locate host" dialog at startup, this is a sign of
problems related to name resolution. If you're on a Sun, see the comments
above about the two executables.
* If you get a "Cannot connect to host" dialog at startup, it could mean that
you are behind a firewall, and need to tell Netscape about your SOCKS
or proxy server. See Options Menu -> Network... -> Proxies,
or consult your system administrator.
* Please read the release notes under "Help -> Release Notes". This
document is updated as problems are found, so please check it before
reporting a bug.
* To unpack a compressed tar file into the current directory, use some
variation of the following command:
zcat the-file.tar.Z | tar -vxf -
* The files ending with ".gz" contain the exact same data, but are
smaller because they are compressed with `gzip' rather than
`compress'. If you have gzip on your system, you can unpack
these files with
gzip -dc the-file.tar.gz | tar -vxf -
* And remember, it's spelled N-e-t-s-c-a-p-e, but it's pronounced "Mozilla."
